Alex Volkanovski and Chan Sung Jung have both verbally agreed to fight each other on March 5, 2022, sources say.

This comes after ESPN reported earlier today that Volkanovski’s original opponent, Max Holloway, was forced out of their fight due to injury.

Here’s how we got to this point:

Late Thursday, Volkanovski’s team was officially told Holloway was out. It’s unclear at this time how long he’s out for but it might be a while, I’m told. Here’s hoping that isn’t true.

Straight away, Volkanovski and his team focused on Jung. That’s who they want. They’ve wanted him for two years.

Remember this?

There’s a ton more examples of them going back and forth, but you get the point.

They aren’t considering anyone else. They’ve told the UFC this.

Earlier this afternoon, the fight was offered to “Zombie” and he agreed.

Volkanovski also tweeted this:

Now, nothing has been signed, but both want it, and especially when the champ wants it, it usually happens. No paperwork has been sent out yet, too. It’s all very fresh but it’s looking good.

I know what you might be thinking:

What about Giga Chikadze? Well, he does have to win next week. And even if he does, would he be ready on March 5? Who knows.

Henry Cejudo? The UFC isn’t too happy with ol’ CCC these days. He left them high and dry, remember? He was never considered, I’m told.

Josh Emmett? Never really considered.

Yair Rodriguez? Just fought. Banged up.

Arnold Allen? Not quite there yet.

So, Volkanovski vs. Zombie it is. A fight over two years in the making. I don’t hate it. It will be very entertaining and there’s a backstory.

That fight + Yan vs. Sterling 2, makes for a solid UFC 272 co-bill, in my opinion.

I like this fight better than Chikadze. Zombie deserves it. Always comes to fight. Hope it gets booked.

this makes no sense to me. See what Giga does next week. If he wins, give it to him. Zombie is 1-1 in two years, got dominated by the guy that lost to the champion (Ortega), and somehow slides in there? BS
