Nick is different. He is different in almost every way than UFC fighters from the past or than any current fighter. He is painfully honest, almost to his own detriment. He doesn't stay silent when he sees injustice. Whether that is medicinal marijuana use or the unfair rules in the UFC rewarding those who avoid action and pin down their opponent. Or whether it is standing up for himself when he is being disrespected or misrepresented. People have it ALL wrong when they say the Diaz brothers love to fight and will fight anyone anytime. I get frustrated because both Nate and Nick, especially Nick, explain their mentality and it is almost like fans and media choose not to listen and believe this other stereotype that they are violent gangsters. Neither of them like to fight or want to fight. They grew up in a hopeless situation, no support in the home because their father abandoned them leaving their mother working around the clock to barely support their family. The lack of support and supervision at home lead to poor performances in school. Nick sought out martial arts as a form of protection. Falling in love with jiu jitsu opened up a whole new world and an opportunity to make a living for himself. His strong, internal, moral compass is why I love him so much. Nick helped raise his siblings and was the moral backbone of the home and basically saved Nate from life of a drug dealer or gang member.

Nick is just one of us. Trying to get by each day. He doesn't need much because he says those around him get by without much. He stays close to his hometown and away from the lime light. He is modest and not afraid to show vulnerability and sorrow or regret or guilt. The post-fight press conference for the GSP show or BJ Penn especially are almost heartbreaking. You want to help Nick because he doesn't seem to have anyone around him who knows how to help themselves let alone him.

Nick doesn't put on a fake face like all of the other fighters. He doesn't read off a script or pretend or play a character. I gravitated towards him because of his shyness and awkwardness in interviews. I can relate to social anxiety and the fear of being judged.

There are so many reasons why I support and root for Nick Diaz, I could go on and on.

He is so relatable and misunderstood. I wish people would actually listen to him. More fighters should want to be like Nick and Nate Diaz, they laid out the blueprint to be a success and fan favorite. Fewer fighters should want to be Money MacGregor, look where his antics have got him. He is wealthy in the pocket but morally and spiritually bankrupt because he has to continue playing up this character he created.

A lot of people are doubting him right now which is upsetting. He is always and forever the underdog for one reason or another. People need to lift this legend up and cherish him because once he is gone, there will be no one else like him.

He's a vegan pot-smoker with no visible tattoos. In a sea of sameness, Nick is different.

Nick Diaz represents us all who are outcasts, the disenfranchised, the castaways. He is a shining beacon of hope. He lights the path for all of us that are broken. It goes beyond the fighting. He represents the raw, honest, painful truth of life, that you can overcome the nightmares of your past.
